A properly functioning Thyroid Gland impacts each and every cell in your body!
Your Thyroid Gland is a butterfly shaped gland located in the lower part of your neck right below your Adam’s apple. Even though it only weighs about an ounce, this amazing gland is responsible for making and storing vital hormones that help control your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and how fast you turn food into energy (metabolism).
The less the Thyroid does it job, the harder it is for you to lose weight, control your blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature.
No cell can completely perform all its task properly without the essential hormones produced by your incredible Thyroid Gland. Hormones, the body’s messenger system, tell every cell and organ what to do and when to do it.
The most important hormones produced and stored in your amazing Thyroid Gland are called T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). When cells need more Thyroid hormones to do their work, the tiny pituitary gland deep within the brain hears the call and signals the Thyroid with TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone) to make more T4 and T3.
The Thyroid then kicks into high gear and uses iodine found in iodized salt to make more T4 and T3. The Thyroid also makes calcitonin to strengthen your bones with calcium.
Several things can cause your Thyroid to slow down. Poor nutrition, a lack of minerals, proteins and vitamins, certain medications, adrenal fatigue, too much stress, toxins, heavy metals, chronic fatigue and autoimmune disorders can all cause the Thyroid to slow down and produce too little hormone.
Are you experiencing any of these symptoms:
If yes, then your Thyroid may already be poorly functioning. You might also be Hypothyroid!

Your Thyroid may present with a host of issues and conditions ranging from Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism to Grave’s disease, hyperthyroidism and a rare but potentially dangerous Thyroid storm. A highly experienced and thoroughly trained medical doctor that understands how to properly test ALL of the correct Thyroid hormones including antibodies and then safely and effectively restores your Thyroid back to normal is critical to restoring your overall health.
Conventional doctors generally only order one to three tests for Thyroid function. That’s what they were taught in medical school. They may typically order:
The problem with just ordering these tests alone is that they often do not tell the whole story.
Patients with symptoms such as fatigue and weight gain from a poorly producing Thyroid, may have a dysfunctional pituitary gland! This can happen from viruses, bacteria, stress, yeast, inflammation, toxins, pesticides, micro-plastics and damaged mitochondria (your cells energy factories). This results in “low-normal” TSH levels and “low-normal” T4 and T3 levels. Few doctors seem to understand the significance of this and will simply tell you, “Your Thyroid is fine.
In fact, it may not be fine at all.
A second problem may occur when T4, the building block of T3 the active Thyroid hormone, doesn’t convert into T3 properly. If your doctor relies too heavily on the TSH test result, the TSH test may suggest that there is plenty of T4 made. It may even appear normal. However, nothing shows that T4 may not have been converted properly into the required T3.
Another problem may exist when a patient reports fatigue, weight gain and a host of other symptoms of low Thyroid. It is also possible that the Thyroid converted T4 into reverse T3. RT3 is an inactive blocking hormone that stops T3 from attaching to cells to do its work.
During famines long ago, Ancient Humans needed to slow and stop metabolism to store fat for survival. Reverse T3 (RT3) was fantastic for doing that. In our modern world there is often plenty of food so that RT3 is no longer needed. But it’s still here. Reverse T3 can increase during bouts with chronic illnesses such as Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia, Yo-Yo dieting (and quick weight gains that follow) Stress, Heavy Metals and Infections in chronically ill and immune compromised patients. A skilled and experienced physician like Dr. Hamilton can properly test for and guide you away from elevated RT3.
And if this isn’t enough, there is also the possibility of Thyroid resistance. Often discounted, evidence suggests it does indeed exist. Even if the Thyroid makes enough hormone in the blood, the body may not use it.
Many Thyroid issues can make a patient feel miserable and unfortunately a physician may still misdiagnose them all.
Congratulations! Your doctor found Hypothyroidism to explain your miserable symptoms. But now let’s hope they are well versed in your hormone replacement therapy.
Many conventional doctors will order synthetic hormones to replace what’s missing.
Synthroid and Levoxyl are synthetic T4 preparations. If your Thyroid already cannot convert T4 into T3, or if there is too much Reverse T3 that blocks T3 or if you are already Thyroid resistant, these drugs may do little but cause side effects such as:
Long-term use of synthetic Thyroid medication can also lead to:
Armour Thyroid, a pig extract, may be a bit better for some, but is still often inadequate.
Cytomel, a very short acting T3 version from regular pharmacies, and may not work well for some.
One Thyroid therapy of choice is a compounded prescription made for just one patient at a time. Prescribing to correct Hypothyroidism requires understanding proper and careful dosing of T4/T3 or T3 preparations alone.
Dr. Alyse Hamilton is a well-trained, highly experienced integrative metabolic physician. She will first determine what is and is not working with your Thyroid. This may include underlying mineral and vitamin deficiencies which can cause poor hormone production. If hormone replacement is called for, you will be offered molecularly identical bio-identical Thyroid hormones. Many patients report this makes a night and day difference with far fewer side effects.
When rebalancing your amazing Thyroid Gland, Dr. Alyse also focuses on your critical immune system and “gut” performance as well as your mini, mighty adrenal glands.
